What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is the application of a decorative and protective finish to a metal parts and materials. The result is a thicker, more durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint.

How It Works

Applied with a free-flowing electrostatically charged spray gun tip, the powder is charged as it moves through the nozzle, causing it to stick to the grounded object. This allows the powder to fuse to the object during the curing process which involves heating the coated parts in a large oven. While curing, the powder is melted and fused together to form a strong, protective finish.

Our Process

We understand that quality surface preparation is the key to achieving a long-lasting and durable finish. Attention to detail is something that we take seriously, so we apply a unique in-line treatment to ensure that each piece is perfectly prepped before we work on it.

Stage 1:

We thoroughly inspect each piece that is brought to us to ensure it has an ideal surface for coat adhesion. If further preparation is required, we will make recommendations as to what needs to be done to ensure you will be satisfied with your final product.

Stage 2:

Each part is put through a degreasing and cleaning process before a final chemical rinse to remove any hand oils or dust that may still be present. We then take care to mask, plug or cap any surfaces that are not to be powder coated.

Stage 3:

Each part is then racked in our new application booth where it is electrically grounded, and the powder is electrostatically charged. The grounded part naturally attracts the powder evenly and consistently.

Stage 4:

Once the powder coat has been applied, the part is then moved to our oven where the powder melts, flows and is fused permanently to the surface. During this process it is carefully monitored for proper curing parameters. Once cured, they are allowed to cool to room temperature before a final inspection is done to ensure proper coating was applied.

Why is Powder Coating Better?

Powder Coating is much more durable than, and up to four times thicker than conventional paints. It covers the most complex shapes and is great for hiding imperfections on the base part. The finish retains its colour and gloss over time and provides greater customisation with a variety of colours, finishes and textures available.

  • Highly resistant to chips, scratches and abrasions
  • Tolerable to high temperatures and ultra-violet light
  • Fuel and chemical resistant
  • A good electrical insulator
  • Environmentally responsible
  • Free from volatile organic compounds and polluting solvents.
