What does powder coating do?

Powder coating applies a protective and attractive top coat to protect metals from rust and corrosion.

How does powder coating differ from liquid coating?

Powder coating is the application of a dry powder that coats and adheres to metal surfaces when cured, protecting it from deterioration and giving it an attractive top coat. Liquid coating also protects metal surfaces, however it is done with a paint-like substance, resulting in a thinner protective layer. Powder coating is extremely durable which is why Proline insist on powder coating for all metals that are exposed to the elements.

How does powder coating work?

Prior to the powder coat being applied, the metal materials must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure there are no traces of rust or corrosion. This is usually done by sand-blasting. After the material is cleaned, the powder is sprayed onto the surface before it is placed in an oven where the powder is melted down, causing it to coat and adhere to all surfaces resulting in an attractive and protective coating.

Is powder coating safe?

Yes. Powder coating is safe if it is applied within the guidelines, by qualified technicians. Powder coating has little, if any, volatile organic compounds. Excess powder is also recyclable, resulting in minimal waste after it is applied.

How long is the powder coating process?

The preparation of metal surfaces can take some time to ensure a quality finish, however the powder coating process takes approximately one hour.

What is the largest material size you can powder-coat?

We have the capacity to powder coat materials up to 6.5 meters in length and 2.5 meters in height, affording us the capability to assist with large-scale industrial and commercial projects.

Can you match a paint colour?

Most Interpon and Dulux colours come in powder form, but we can assist you to develop a custom colour to suit your project.

Can you powder coat over powder coat?

Depending on the quality of the current powder coat on the materials, it may be possible to powder coat over the top. However we would need to assess if this is a suitable option for your needs.

Can you powder coat over paint?

No. All existing paint needs to be stripped from the metals by means of sandblasting, soda blasting or chemical wash prior to powder-coating. This is the only way we can ensure a high-quality, durable finish.
